It’s not just that U.S. Bank Stadium is twice as big as its predecessor the MetroDome but its cost is somewhat jaw-dropping; rounding up at $1.13 billion (yes, you’ve read it right), this 1.75 million-square-foot stadium is the perfect spot for Vikings’ fans and their sporting enthusiasm. The upgrades in technology, design, and architecture are simply marvelous and we have a feeling the fans will love watching their favorite team win in these premises.

A New Chapter

Minnesota Vikings will be remembered in history for a number of things, and one of them sure will be 2016 opening of their US Bank Stadium, the newest stadium in the NFL. The Minnesota sports remember the Vikings from 1961 when they first started playing at Metropolitan Stadium. Not having a stadium of their own, Vikings used to rub elbows with baseball’s Minnesota Twins until the opening of Target Field in 2010. Although the Vikings did remain persistent in their attempt to secure funding support from the State of Minnesota for a new stadium all throughout the 2000s, it wasn’t until March 1, 2012, that the Vikings themselves and their fans finally had a reason to celebrate. Namely, Mark Dayton Minnesota Governor announced that a new stadium will be built on the site of the Metrodome.

The stadium was financed by the City of Minneapolis and the State of Minnesota as well as the Vikings themselves.

The construction

In the midst of the Metrodome being demolished, the home of the NCAA’s Minnesota Golden Gophers TCF Bank Stadium hosted the Vikings’ games for two seasons straight. Constructing and building of this new stadium took a lot of time, dedication and effort – the construction began in late 2013 and lasted for three years. A year before (June 2015) $220 million has been spent on purchasing the naming rights over 25 years.
The grand opening of Minnesota Vikings U.S. Bank Stadium happened in July 2016 with Vikings playing their first game here in September 18, 2016, against the Green Bay Packers.

US Bank Stadium is a spectacular building Vikings are incredibly proud of and they have every reason to be; located in downtown Minneapolis, the stadium features a fixed, 60% transparent roof creating an outdoor feel indoors by allowing natural light to filter inside. With over 66,000 purple seats and the lower deck surrounding the field, US Bank Stadium sure is a delight for the fans. Speaking of delights, there are 23 Turf Suites within the stadium, allowing the fans to be only 25 feet from the action of the field. The stadium’s west side is known as the Medtronic Plaza, and it features the iconic 160-foot long legacy Vikings ship. Inspired by the ancient Viking’s ship, this one prides on its 2,000 square foot curved LED video board “replacing” the ship’s 55-foot tall sail. Medtronic Plaza makes for a phenomenal gathering spot for the fans.
Beyond the lower level seats on the west side rest 95 foot high, pivoting glass doors, letting fans enjoy the Minneapolis skyline and the weather when it’s warm.
US Bank Stadium counts a number of amenities including 9,000 club seats, multiple 131 luxury suites, numerous club areas, and a fantasy football lounge – Club Purple. And, that’s not all – both end zones have two 50′x 120′HD video/scoreboards! Go figure.
U.S. Bank Stadium and its versatility
Apart from hosting football, but the US Bank Stadium will be the host to basketball, baseball, motocross, concerts and more. This most versatile stadium in the NFL is scheduled to host Super Bowl LII in February 2018 and the 2019 Men’s NCAA Basketball Final Four. We kind of have a feeling that it doesn’t get better than that and are positive the stadium will be centre of plenty sporting events to come!
